Providing For Your Pet's Future Without You
The unexpected can happen at anytime. In the confusion that accompanies a person’s illness, accident, or death, your pet may be overlooked.

To prevent this from happening, please take these simple precautions:
Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you.
Provide them with keys to your home, feeding instructions, veterinarian information, and permanent care provisions you have made for your pet.

Can I entrust the care of my pet to an organization?
For a fee or donation, the Humane Society of South Central Michigan (HSSCM) may agree to find your pet a new home. You must realize though, that finding a good home for your pet beforehand, would definitely be the better option due to the confinement that may come in any animal facility.

Do I need legal assistance?
Before making formal arrangements to provide for the long-term care of your pet, seek help from professionals to protect your interests and those of your pet.
This is where temporary guardians are needed. Your pet will need immediate care, whereas, a will takes days or even weeks to sort out the many formalities.
By including your pet in your will though, he/she will eventually be given the care you expect. To ensure this, a general rule is to leave the money necessary to care for your pet.
By naming the Humane Society of South Central Michigan in your will, you are demonstrating your lasting commitment to animal welfare. We hope you will consider the HS-SCM for at least the residue of your estate.

Why a will?
Preparing your will today allows you to know, during your lifetime, the impact your careful planning and foresight will have on the future of loved ones, and you gain personal, financial, and legal advantages as well.

With A Will…
You express your desires concerning the control and distribution of your assets.
You decide how to protect and provide for your family.
You can remember special friends and loved ones.
You retain control of your assets during your lifetime.
You can employ tax-wise strategies to minimize tax exposures and maximize benefits for your family, friends, and loved ones.
You can make a difference for the organization you believe in during your lifetime.
Without a Will…
The state will appoint an individual of its own choice to determine who will receive the efforts of your life’s work and in what amount.
The state will not recognize special friends or loved ones for bequests.
The state will not know the beliefs you want to perpetuate through bequests to favorite organizations.
