Executive Director — HSSCM Job Description

Job Definition
The Board of Directors supervises this position.
Responsible/accountable for all operations relating to the HSSCM.
Plans, organizes and develops programs which will meet the principles and objectives of the HSSCM under the policies established by the Board of Directors. Manages the activities and directs policy of the HSSCM Animal Shelter. Assigns and evaluates the work of the staff and volunteers engaged in carrying out the agency’s programs. Recommends and implements agency programs and services. Responsible for financial management of the agency. Serves as primary grant writer and as agency representative to the community as directed by the Board of Directors.
 
Qualifications
Demonstrated passion for the welfare of companion animals.
 
Experience
3 – 5 years of financial and staff management, with additional staff experience in public administration and management desired.

 

Education
Graduate with Bachelors Degree or higher of a college or university with a major in Business Administration, Public Administration and/or Animal Science, a related field or equivalent experience, plus at least 3 years administrative/managerial experience.
   
Communication
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Experience in grant/proposal development and writing.
Familiarity with word processing, database and spreadsheet software applications.
   
Managerial
Thorough knowledge of administration, organizations, managing for quality and supervision.
Thorough knowledge of budgeting and understanding of accounting principles and practices. Must be capable of budget management, cash flow discipline, and operating within strict spending guidelines.
Thorough knowledge of personnel management, human resource practices, counseling, staff development and evaluation.
Familiarity with purchasing and procurement.
Ability to prepare financial reports, statements and related documents.
Familiarity with education/volunteer/fund development.
Skill of managing a non-profit with limited resources.
   
Physical Demands

The environment may be stressful. Hours are irregular and dependent upon projects and demands of organization and customers.

Responsibilities (in order of priority)
Manage and directs all activities relating to the HSSCM Companion Animal Shelter.
Directs the budgetary and financial control program and its preparation.
Oversight of hiring, training, scheduling, promotions and the dismissal of personnel.
Administers personnel policies established by the Board.
Engages in fundraising planning/implementation activities.
Writes and prepares grant applications and program proposals.
Directs the marketing function.
Advocates for animal welfare in the community.

Oversight of fund disbursement.

Work with the Board and committees to develop policy.
Maintains liaison with city/county officials, press and community.
Negotiates contracts with governmental units.
Prepares and submits annual reports on programs/services, finance and policy.
Represents the HSSCM at community functions and meetings.
Actively networks with other community, humane and service agencies.
Evaluate the Society’s performance on a regular basis through community surveys and the like and reports the findings to the Board.
Oversees Society’s correspondence.
Oversees the establishment/maintenance of accurate record keeping as required.
Directs the development of public relations and educational material.
   
Salary Range is $40,000 – $50,000.
